Wow, I just found your blog and it really speaks to me. I have three sons: my twins have severe autism and developmental delays… still not potty-trained at ten, put everything in their mouths and so forth. My adoptive son is hitting puberty and turning out to have pretty serious mental health issues. It feels so hard to have a normal small talk kind of conversation with the average person. This post reminds me that it is time to go out and join some new types of support groups. And that it is okay to have multiple kids with serious issues. It can still be a good life, but it is going to take some re-thinking of what the future holds. Thank you for your blog.

Great post! Perfect timing! I was actually just thinking about you the other day wondering about your kiddos’ diagnoses and if bi-polar and/or mood disorders were on your list. All four kiddos had specialist appointments this week. Though our youngest already has four diagnoses, the doctor spoke plainly and said that she’s worried about a mood disorder, possibly the early signs of bi-polar disorder. It was definitely a movie night for me!

Yep. And the ones you thought you saw coming can still blindside you.

I think you can get “used to” the pattern, and knowing that each visit is going to uncover a little more. But you never get “used to” hearing “something else is wrong.” I cope with humor — between 5 kids and 15 specialty departments between them (several see more than one kid), I always say, “Well, at least we already have a doc from that department on speed dial!”

I wish I could have read this post last February when we received the diagnosis of ASD for our (then) three year-old. It was so overwhelming, thought I found myself in a devastating state of helplessness. It was actually through reading blogs and starting my own that I realized IT’S GOING TO BE OKAY. It’s comforting to know there are other parents out there who just get it. Thank you for reminding me of that.

It is overwhelming, especially when you think about all your child already has to go through…but you will do the same thing you've done before…learn about these new acronyms and how you can best help your child with them and then together, you will move forward. You wrote this one for me today, didn’t you? Last week we got the official (and added) diagnosis of ADHD and LD. We’re still trying to emotionally muddle through all of this… not to mention an upcoming IEP meeting and changing plans on how to best help our kiddo. It does feel overwhelming… like how much more should my kiddo have to wade through. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I find this amazing that you have gotten so many diagnoses for your family. That is really great advice for parents with a new diagnosis.
