The forecast called for rain on Canada Day so we decided not to host a BBQ like we had been talking about doing. The kids were disappointed but with weather that would have forced us to host inside and the state of my house being what it was, I didn’t feel like there was any other choice.
When I woke up on Canada Day, the skies were clear so I checked the forecast again and it had changed dramatically. It sounded like it would be sunny skies all afternoon and evening. I then did what any sleep-deprived mom would do. I texted a bunch of friends and invited them and their families to come over later that day for a Canada Day party!
It wasn’t until after I got out of the shower and came downstairs to a messy kitchen that I fully realized what I had done! I had 3 hours before my guest would start arriving!
I quickly did the dishes, got one of the kids to help me with some tidying and wiped down the counters. I then wrote a shopping list and ran out the door with one of my daughters to buy some food so that I would have something to feed the people coming later that afternoon! Including our family, there would be 30 people to feed.
You know how it is when things take longer than you are expecting? The first two stores we went to didn’t have one of the items that I needed so we went to a third and then hurried home. It wasn’t until we were unloading the groceries that I realized that I had not purchased any decorations for the party. One look at the Renova red paper towels on my counter and I knew how to fix that problem!
I had yet to whip up the food for the guests so I had to leave the decorating to the last minute. Once the food was done, I put a white plastic tablecloth down on the table, folded some flowers out of the paper towel (see how in the video at the bottom) and placed those on the table. I then used a stencil to trace red maple leaves on the back of the paper towels, had one of my friend’s daughters cut them out (because at this point, people had started arriving!) and added those to the table. I lined some bowls with the paper towel and used red cups and when I stepped back, the table looked ready for a party!
I also had pocket sized tissue packs in fun scents (Fresh Lavender, Green Spearmint and Yellow Mango), so I put a ribbon around those to hand out as favours. The kids love them!
I used the food to help tie in the theme as well. I pressed some maple leaf sprinkles that we had left over from making our Canada Day playdough into the top of the gluten free rice krispie squares my son made. I used tomatoes which are naturally red in the caprese, sausage skewers and in the veggie tray. There is red and white in the Santa Fe Spirals and I added some red candy and liquorice to the table for more colour.
Tips for throwing together a party at the last minute:
Add a splash of colour.
Having RENOVA paper products stocked comes in handy for adding colour and fun without taking away from the food or conversation. Even just strategically placing their bright napkins can take your party to the next level.
Keep easy food on hand.
I love to entertain so I always keep things such as olives, pickles, crackers, cheese, salsa, and tortilla chips in the house. That right there is a great start towards a party menu. I also keep a few appetizers in the freezer that can be brought out in a pinch.
Santa Fe Spirals – I make them and freeze them in rolls and then thaw them and slice them the day of the party.
Cranberry Baked Brie Puff Pastry Bites – Just pop them out of the freezer and serve!
Awesome Cheese Dip – Incredibly fast to make. I freeze in small containers and then cook when company is over.
Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers – Can be frozen and cooked the day of the party.
Make-Ahead Spinach Phyllo Roll Ups – Make ahead and freeze. Or you can take the easier route and buy pre-made Spanakopita and keep it in your freezer for occasions such as these.
Have a master list.
I have a short cheat sheet that I can pull out if I am having unexpected company or putting together a last minute party. It includes things I don’t want to forget to do like:
- make sure the bathroom is stocked with toilet paper
- put out a garbage bag
- plates, cutlery, cups, napkins
- look in the mirror (I’m so busy making food, I always forget to get myself ready!)
- wipe counters
- clear entryway (first impressions!)
- fill water jug and put in fridge to cool
Remember what matters most.
Decorations and great food are important, but ultimately, it’s relationships that matter. Don’t stress about everything being perfect or the house being clean. Be sure to take time to visit with those who came to your get-together and thank them for their presence. Friends and family are what matters most.
