There are many demands on our time and on our energy. It seems like it is getting harder and harder to keep up with the expectations in this fast paced world. Feelings of inadequacy or worry often decrease our level of happiness.
There are many things we could do to change our emotional state but most are time consuming or energy consuming. Today, I’m sharing with you a tiny thing that can put a smile on your face.
Add something that you love.
The trick is simple but it works. Add something into your life that brings you a small bit of joy.
If you love flowers, always keep an arrangement of fresh flowers in your home. Don’t wait for someone else to get them for you. Buy them for yourself or go outside and pick wildflowers and make an arrangement.
Play music in the background so that you can hum while you do dishes or dance around your kitchen. Treat yourself to your favourite meal. Get a bright and cheerful picture to hang in a place where you will see it every day. Go for a walk every evening if you love the outdoors. Sit on your front step and watch the stars. Put up pictures of loved ones. Hang a beach scene or image from a destination you’ve always wanted to visit or have fond memories of.
I took these two pictures at my mom’s home. They show two of the things that she has added to bring her a little bit of joy every day.
She has four frames with pictures of her grandkids (I’m only showing the ones with my kids) that greet her every day and she has chosen cheerful throw pillows in colours she loves, including one that says “sunshine”. These are wonderful examples of how just a small thing can remind you of something good.
Add one small thing that you love into your life.
If you are joining me for the 31 day challenge towards a better life, there will be tasks that I will give you that are more difficult than this one, but don’t skip over this one just because it’s simple. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that can make the biggest difference.
On Day 2, I asked you to begin getting rid of clutter. It may seem to go against that by saying that you should add something more into your life or into your home, but adding something that will bring you a small measure of joy is not clutter. In fact, adding something you love will help you be even more ruthless in purging because getting rid of the unwanted helps what you do want to stand out more.
