“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~ Lao-tzu
It is often the first step of a journey that takes the longest to make. Often that step is many years in the making, whether it be in planning or thinking about or avoiding.
Consider this: the average new foster parent thinks about becoming a foster parent for four years before making that first phone call. Becoming a foster parent is obviously a huge decision and a lot of thought, discussion and research should go into making it but I find it interesting to note that and it makes me wonder how long people wait before taking the first step towards other things.
Marathon runners don’t start by running over 42 km! They begin training by walking or running short distances and work their way up from there.
“Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.” ~ Victor Kiam
Funny thing. In writing this post, I was searching for a good quote about procrastination and I got sidetracked by an email that came in and that took me over to read a blog post on someone else’s site and then I took a phone call and returned a text and googled the name of the guy who gave the quote and before I knew it, 26 minutes had gone by without me accomplishing a single thing. 26 minutes out of the hour and a half that I had left of kid-free writing time and I squandered them procrastinating while writing a post about procrastination!
I’m somewhat of an expert on procrastination and always have said that I work best under pressure. One of the reasons that I often procrastinate is that I don’t quite know where to start or I’m nervous about starting. I find that once I do start, the rest of the process isn’t nearly as scary.
Today, think about one thing you have always wanted to do. Maybe reference that bucket list you made the other day. If something is holding you back, whether it be fear or just procrastination, decide that today is the day and take that first step. Make the phone call, write the first sentence, speak the first word, run the first mile, pay the first dollar…take one step towards your goal today.
