This resonated with me in such a big way. In 2011, our son was stillborn. It was an awfully sad time that almost felt like too much. Our grief is misunderstood and dismissed by others. How could we hurt for a child we had not met? I would ask them the flipside, How can you love a child you haven’t met? I wept when I saw pictures of this whale. I remembered asking my husband how we would know when to let the nurse take our son. He said, “we will just know”. I love that this Mama whale held her baby as long as she needed. I love that the world watched.

Thank you for this encouragement! I adopted my daughter at birth in January of this year, a beautiful miracle! (I had waited 5 years) She was my baby and I was her mommy and I was full of joy! On June 26, her doctor sent us to the ER to check for fluid on/around her brain/shunt surgery... but actually she was diagnosed with something much more rare- hydranencephaly, and at most 2 weeks. So we loved her, held her, made her comfortable, and she took one last gentle breath on July 9. She gave me an amazing 6 months here on earth, and Jesus called her home! And He holds her and He holds me! It’s been excruciating, but I know her life still should make a mark- even while I’m grieving. And when others acknowledge the grief, the tears, the memories- you feel less alone, so thank you!
